DMITRIEV, Vladimir Karpovich was born in 1868 in Smolensk, Russia.
Graduate Political Economics, University Moscow, 1896.
The first Russian mathematical economist, his work was influnced by Ricardo and Cournot. During his lifetime and up to the Russian Revolution, his work received some favourable notice, mainly from outside Russia but also from within. Nevertheless, his writings were literally rediscovered in the 1960s when the work of Sraffa on Ricardo illuminated Dmitriev’s pioneering interpretation of Ricardo.
Since his ideas, though not Marxian, are compatible with Marxian ideas, it has proved possible to use his precedents to legitimise the introduction of mathematical methods into Russian economics.
