  • HUTCHESON, Francis was born in 1694 in Co. Down, Ireland.

  • Career

    • Adam Smith’s teacher, whose philosophy had a basis in utilitarian ideas. To him virtue and natural law were both grounded in utility. His System.. incorporates material which was given in his lectures, and the divisions of the subject he used are very similar to those later adopted by Smith.

      He laid great stress on the division of labour, and his ideas on the value of money and whether corn or labour afforded the most stable standard of value resemble those of Smith. Presbyterian Minister. Professor Moral Philosophy, University Glasgow, 1729-1746.
