Work in labour economics concentrated at first on unemployment and on the duration and measurement of unemployment spells. Later work on unemployment has extended to the study of the effectiveness of government ‘special programmes’ in improving the employment prospects of participants. I have also started work on the analysis of women’s working lives.

This work, to date, has involved the re-analysis of the United Kingdom National Training Survey and of the Women and Employment Survey. In a completely different vein I have also investigated the corporate purchase of property and liability insurance. Financial economic theory suggests that such behaviour should not occur but it can be shown that certain common tax treatments of insured losses make insurance purchase rational.
