    • Statistician and economist, and leading critic of Peel’s Bank Act, 1844. His continuation of Tooke’s History of Prices to cover the period 1847-1856 was designed to refute the theories of the currency school which lay behind Peel’s Act. He denied that an increase in the volume of money in circulation had the effects that were alleged.
