My research has concentrated upon the operation of labour markets. Early work examined the determinants of labour turnover across industries and the determinants of the movement of money wages over time. More recently, my interests have concerned the behaviour of trade unions and aspects of the supply of labour.
With respect to trade unions, I have been interested in determining the empirical relevance of different trade union objectives and alternative models describing the way in which wages and employment are set in unionised markets. My research on labour supply has involved the application of the conventional allocation model to a number of different issues, such as the definition of a constant utility index number of real wages and the evaluation of different income maintenance programme including the negative income tax and the wage subsidy scheme.
