PERLMAN, Selig was born in 1888 in Bialystok, Poland.
Labour historian and theoretician, whose theory of the labour
movement he called the CommonsPerlman theory in tribute to his mentor at Wisconsin. The theory was not abstract but was based on his encyclopedic knowledge of labour history. He believed that job security and not wage bargaining or workers’ control was the true explanation of the rise of trade unions.
