Early research interests included distributed lag models and the empirical problem of modelling expectations formation. The term structure of interest rates, with attention to the empirical use of hypothesis of rational expectations formation, became a primary application. Subsequent interests included the question of how shortand long-term interest rates would behave in an efficient capital market.
A special concern to me was the question, at both the theoretical and empirical level, of the ‘forecastability’ of movements in longterm interest rates. Foreign the past three years I have been concerned primarily with issues related to private pension plans and the retirement income system. Specific interests include annuity design, the measurement of pension liabilities, the valuation of benefits by
workers, and the problem of accounting for pension costs.
