PREOBRAZHENSKI, Evgeni was born in 1886 in Russia.
Participant in the Soviet economic debate of the late 1920s. He
was a leading spokesman of the leftwing opposition, and his writings, though often concerned with particular current issues contain insights of high quality. His starting point was the ‘goods famine’ of 1925 which he explained in terms of fundamental flaws in the running of the Soviet economy.
He favoured a high rate of economic expansion at the expense of the agricultural sector.
The defeat of his viewpoint led inevitably to his disappearance in the purges of the 1930s.
