Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

(This volume is intended to be more than a mere collection...)
This volume is intended to be more than a mere collection of economic reprints. Such compilations have often been made; as for example in Dunbar sL aws relating to Currency, Finance and Banking ;R ands Economic History ;and in the Reports of the United States Industrial Commission. This collection is planned for use specifically as a text-book; not merely as a handy volume for reference, or as a collection of original documents. It is not intended, however, to supplant, but rather to supplement, the standard treatises on the trust problem; and may readily be used in connection with Jenks sT rust Problem, Ely sM onopolies and Trusts, or Meade sT rust Finance. It denotes a deliberate attempt at the application to the teaching of economics of the case system, so long successful in our law schools. With this end in view, each chapter is intended to illustrate a single, definite, typical phase of the general subject. The primary motive is to further the interests of sound economic teaching, with especial reference to the study of concrete problems of great public and private interest. A difficulty in the substitution of present-day social and economic studies for the good, old-fashioned, linguistic ones, or for the modern sciences, a difficulty especially peculiar to descriptive economics as differentiated from economic theory, has always been to secure data sufficiently concrete, definite and convenient to form a basis for analysis, discussion and criticism. The lecture system has its advantages in stimulating interest and it is to be hoped arousing enthusiasm among students. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) August 16, 1941) was an American economist and racial theorist who is today mostly famous for his tripartite racial theory of Europe. His work was later taken up by white supremacists and eugenicists. In his time, he was also quite famous for his criticisms of American railroad economics and American business practices in the 1920s and 1930s.

(It purports to go deeper than that, down toward the root ...)
It purports to go deeper than that, down toward the root of things. It is partly the expression of a lifelong aspiration to promote a greater equality of opportunity among men a more even chance at getting a living all round, and a fairer show at conserving the fruits of such activity thereafter. Only thus can there be any real pleasure in work and in thrift in the world. And it is upon the reasonable exercise of these virtues that our American democratic polity must depend for its perpetuation. It should be a prime function of government to stimulate and in every way to protect the manifestation of these basic instincts. Property should never be allowed to degenerate into an instrument of oppression. I ts only justification in a free state is that it shall contribute to such an equality of opportunity for all members of the community alike, that each one shall be more able to take care of and to make the best of himself. This, then, is really a study in the relation of property to civilization. My theory of it could not be more pithily stated than in the following characterization of William Cobbett by G. K. Chesterton: He would have been as ready as any merchant or trader to face the fact that man, as God has made him, must make money.
