Dugald STEWART

Dugald STEWART, economist.

Background

  • STEWART, Dugald was born in 1753 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

  • Career

    • His lectures on political economy were extremely well attended and influential, many future statesmen, including Lord Palmerston, being amongst his students. The content of the lectures was derived very closely from Adam Smith, though differed slightly on some matters - e.g. he was rather more sympathetic towards the physiocrats than Smith. He was the author of the first biography of Smith.

Professor Moral Philosophy, University Glasgow, 1785-1810.
