William THOMPSON

William THOMPSON was a British economist.

Background

  • THOMPSON, William was born in 1775 in Cork, Ireland.

  • Career

    • British ‘utilitarian’ socialist and feminist. His earliest theoretical concerns were with problems of distribution, which led him to advocate cooperation rather than competition. He rapidly became recognised as the chief theorist of the co-operative movement and concentrated on the attempt to mobilise opinion amongst the labouring classes in favour of consumers’ and producers’ co-operatives.
