Early work empirically examined the effects of interest-rate changes on aggregate consumer expenditures. The nonlinear models estimated were based upon intertemporal utility maximisation on the part of consumers. The studies found that interest-rate changes significantly affected consumption.
Recent work explores the implications of the experience of the Free Banking Era in the United States (1839-1863) for regulation of current financial institutions. This work calls into question the notion that wildcat banking was prevalent during this period. Frequency domain methods for estimation of distributed lag models with missing observations or errors-invariables are also currently being researched.
The variability of ouput under alternative exchange-rate regimes has been and continues to be a research area.
