Married Gorbachev in early 1960. Her daughter, Irina, is also a doctor. Known as a patron of the arts in the Soviet Union.
Since her husband took up office in March 1985, has accompanied him everywhere, the first among the Soviet leaders’ wives to do so (with the exception of Nina Petrovna Khrushcheva). Made a favourable impression in the West with her intelligence, taste and looks. Known for her love of music, and knowledge of English and French.
Has broken the Soviet leadership tradition of invisible wives. and takes a high profile in cultural, diplomatic and political life at the side of her husband.
