After graduating forty-second in a class of forty-five from the U.S. Military Academy in 1838, he served as a first lieutenant during the Florida War in 1840. He was married to Martha P. Griswold and had children. During the Mexican War, Stevenson fought with distinction at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma and was promoted to captain in 1847.
He served on the Texas frontier, fought in the Seminole War in 1856-1857, and participated in the Utah expedition in 1858-1861. He resigned his commission on June 6,1861, to enter the service of the Confederacy. Stevenson was promoted to brigadier general on March 6,1862, and was sent to east Tennessee, where he forced the withdrawal of federal forces from Cumberland Gap and participated in Braxton Bragg’s Kentucky campaign.
On October 10, 1862, he was promoted to major general and was given a division under Bragg’s command. After fighting in the battle of Murfreesboro, he was sent to reinforce Pemberton at Vicksburg, where he fought at Champion’s Hill and commanded the Confederate right. At the battle of Missionary Ridge in September 1863, he commanded a division under General William Hardee.
Stevenson later served under General J. B. Hood in the Army of Tennessee, where he was temporary commander of Hood’s Corps in the Atlanta campaign and distinguished himself at Resaca and Kenesaw Mountain. He held the center as a division commander at Nashville late in 1864 and ended the war in the Carolinas. Stevenson surrendered in North Carolina and was paroled in Greensboro in May 1865.
After the war, he was a civil and mining engineer in Virginia.
