Kevin James Shay

Journalist and writer for newspapers and magazines since 1978, including The Washington Post-affiliated Gazette, The Dallas Morning News, Dallas Times Herald, Texas Catholic, Minority Business New USA. Author of several books. Won awards from Maryland-Delaware-Washington, D.C. Press Association, Dallas Press Club, and others. Listed in D Magazine’s 1992 Who’s Who, What’s What and the LH High Famous Alumni Authors page.


  • Holds world record for longest road trip across the US by a single driver with at least two kids. Preston and McKenna Shay, in roughly two weeks, 6,950 miles, 2013, certified by RecordSetter, a competitor of Guinness World Records. Holds world record for tallest person to drive across the US in a compact or smaller vehicle, Honda CR-V, 6’ 7” tall, 2013. Part of the group that set the world record for longest group walk for a cause, 7,000 miles, California to Moscow, Russia, 1984-85.

    Played basketball for the Richland College Lakers and Lake Highlands High School Wildcats. Has flown in a hot-air balloon at the world's largest ballooning event in New Mexico, rafted down swift rivers, backpacked through the Grand Canyon and Europe, and ridden in an open-air cockpit, World War II-era Stearman that did loops and rolls. Cub Scout den leader, Girl Scout volunteer, and a coach of his son and daughter’s basketball and baseball teams. He has served on the board of organizations such as Rainbow Bridge, a youth advocacy group in Dallas, and the Dallas chapter of the ACLU, and been a longtime member of organizations such as the Sierra Club.

    • Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Texas, 1981. Attended Richland College, Dallas, 1977-79. Who's Who in American Junior Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa. Basketball team. Sports editor, assistant editor, student newspapers.

    Major achievements

    • Had books published, including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Trip [2014], Walking through the Wall [2012], A Parent’s Guide to Dallas/Fort Worth [2003], and And Justice For All: The Untold History of Dallas [2000].

      Won numerous awards. Stories exposed injustices, political and societal corruption.
