Roberts graduated from Christianburg High School. In 1961, she earned an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from College of William and Mary.
Roberts began her career, co-writing with her cousin, Rosa Bray, the book "Emera Altizer and His Descendants", 1937. Also she wrote the books "Forever Is Too Long", 1946 and "Command the Stars", 1948. In 1952, Ruby became editor of traditional poetry journal "The Lyric" and held it for 25 years. In addition, she wrote the first of her three memoirs "The Way it Was" in 1979 and the second "The Way it Is" in 1994. Roberts was also the author of the children's book "The Story of Buzzy Bee", 1982.
