Will Poulter is a British actor, best known for his roles in We're the Millers (2013), The Maze Runner (2014), and The Revenant (2015). He is a recipient of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Rising Star Award.
Background
Ethnicity:
Will Poulter is of English, Welsh, and Scottish descent.
Will Poulter was born on January 28, 1993, in London, England, United Kingdom, to Caroline (née Barrah), a former nurse, and Neil Poulter, a distinguished physician and Professor of Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine at Imperial College London. His mother was raised in an Anglo family in Kenya, where her own father was a prominent game warden at the Maasai Mara wildlife sanctuary.
Education
At an early age, Will Poulter developed an interest in acting. He went to the Harrodian School, whose alumni also include Robert Pattinson, Jack Whitehall, Tom Sturridge, and George Mackay, where he studied drama. He said in an interview that his drama teacher (Laura Lawson) encouraged his audition for the Hammer and Tongs film, Son of Rambow (2007), by knocking on his English class window and mouthing "auditions" while pointing at a flier.
Poulter completed his school education with A-level grades and was offered a place at Bristol University to study drama. However, he dropped out of the university after having studied for a year as he felt it wasn’t worth it.
Will Poulter played many minor roles before grabbing the main role in the 2007 comedy film Son of Rambow. Written and directed by Garth Jennings, the story revolved around two schoolboys and their attempts to make a film.
Poulter was later cast as the spiky-haired delinquent "Lee Carter". Laura Lawson was also responsible for the E4 comedy sketch show, School of Comedy (2009), in which Poulter appears portraying various roles, such as "Mr. Mills" and a South African security guard. Beginning as an after-school club, School of Comedy (2009) involves children parodying the world of adults. The show was taken to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe and, in 2009, it was adapted into a 6-part television series for E4. The show has, so far, run for two seasons.
Will Poulter played a significant role in the 2010 fantasy adventure film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Directed by Michael Apted, the film was the third and final installment of The Chronicles of Narnia film series. With Poulter playing a supporting role, the film also included actors Skandar Keynes, George Henley, Ben Barnes, and Tilda Swinton. The film was a huge commercial success and also won multiple awards. It was met with mixed reviews.
Dawn Treader was filmed in Queensland, Australia. During his almost six-month stay in Australia, Poulter was accompanied by his mother and younger sister. His father was not able to stay the entire time because of work, and his older siblings were able to stay for about two weeks until they had to return to England. Poulter noted that, though it was hard to be separated from his family, they were able to keep in touch through phone calls and emails.
In 2010, Poulter appeared in the BBC Three pilot The Fades, a 60-minute supernatural thriller written by Skins writer Jack Thorne. The pilot was picked up as a six-part series with an almost entirely new cast, which aired in 2011. The following year, he played the main role in the film Wild Bill. It centers around Bill Hayward, played by Charlie Creed-Miles, who, on parole after spending eight years in prison, finds his two sons, Dean (Poulter) and Jimmy (Sammy Williams), living alone and abandoned by their mother. With the attention of social services now focused on the boys, Bill struggles to play good dad while keeping out of jail as Jimmy gets in trouble with some dangerous acquaintances of Bill's past. Though the film received positive reviews, it was a commercial failure. In 2011, Poulter appeared with the popular British blogger and his School of Comedy co-star Jack Harries on his YouTube channel by the name of JacksGap in a video called Jack and Will.
Another major work in Will Poulter’s career was his role in the 2013 American comedy film We’re the Millers. His popularity increased manifold after his role in the comedy film 'We're the Millers'. The film, which was directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, was a huge success commercially. It won several awards, with Poulter winning the British Academy Film Award for his performance. The cast included Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts, Will Poulter, and Nick Offerman. The story revolved around a pot dealer and his attempts to smuggle drugs into the United States from Mexico. The film was a commercial success grossing more than seven times its budget. It was met with mixed reviews.
Poulter also appeared as a caretaker in the music video for Rizzle Kicks' song "Skip to the Good Bit". Though he loved the script and auditioned for the role of Augustus Waters, he was denied the part in The Fault in Our Stars. He appeared in multiple films in 2014 including The Maze Runner, alongside Dylan O'Brien and Kaya Scodelario, and Glassland. The following year he played a significant role in the Oscar-winning film The Revenant. Directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, the movie was based on a 2002 novel of the same name by Michael Punke. The film starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. The film was a huge commercial success, grossing more than $530 million on a budget of $ 135 million. It also won several awards including three Oscars. The film was met with positive reviews from critics.
In 2017, Poulter played the racist police officer Philip Krauss in the film Detroit, about the 1967 Detroit riots. His work in the film was praised with one critic calling it "towering" while another deemed it "terrifyingly confident".
Poulter was initially cast as Pennywise the Clown in the 2017 remake of the Stephen King miniseries It. However, it was announced in June 2016 that Bill Skarsgård had been cast instead because Poulter dropped out due both to scheduling conflicts (the film was set to shoot at the same time as Poulter was set to begin work on Detroit) as well as the departure of its initial director, Cary Fukunaga.
One of Poulter’s most recent works is his role in the 2017 satirical war film War Machine. The film was directed and written by David Michod. It was based on a book named The Operators, written by Michael Hastings. The story revolved around an American General who is sent to Afghanistan for peace talks. The film starred Brad Pitt, Anthony Michael Hall, Anthony Hayes, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, John Magaro and Scoot McNairy. The film was met with mixed reviews from critics.
In 2018, Poulter reprised his role as Gally in Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third and final installment of the Maze Runner film series. Later that year, he starred in the film The Little Stranger as Roderick "Roddy" Ayres, a facially disfigured, haunted war veteran, and as game developer Colin Ritman in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a standalone interactive film of the Black Mirror television series.

Quotations:
"What my privilege has meant is that I haven’t experienced the same levels of exclusion and inaccessibility that might come with being working class. I’ve certainly felt guilty about that. But guilt for those less privileged and those who experience the prejudice from which I’m protected isn’t enough. Acknowledgment is the first step in hopefully using your privilege to realize a more equitable society. I’m trying to find ways to deconstruct that hierarchy as opposed to just enjoying the privilege and acknowledging the guilt."
"I’m keen to develop as an activist and involve myself in charities and organizations. And with my acting, it’s important that the projects I do have a sociopolitical impact. I try to be conscious about the message. As a white, straight, middle-class male, I’m aware of things I take for granted."

Quotes from others about the person
"He’s viewed in the industry as this incredibly exciting talent. You look at him and think, ‘Is there a Bond in Will at some point? Maybe in 10 years?’ I could see that. I could imagine him being a very dark Bond indeed." - Lenny Abrahamson
"Will was staying in the accent so he didn’t lose it when he went back. He was really locked in. Watching him in the film, you think, ‘Oh yeah, there you go - DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will.’ He just fits right in." - Garth Jennings
