The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on September 11, 1973, by Columbia Records.
Born to Run is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen. It was released on August 25, 1975 through Columbia Records.
The Ghost of Tom Joad is the eleventh studio album, and the second acoustic album released by American recording artist Bruce Springsteen. The album was released on November 21, 1995, through Columbia Records.
Released in Europe to coincide with Bruce Springsteen's spring 1993 tour of the continent, this album is a 13-track, nearly 72-minute audio version of Springsteen's video concert broadcast on MTV in the fall of 1992.
Compared to the gargantuan Live/1975-85, 2001's Live in New York City seems like the very definition of restraint, but consider this -- not only does it span two discs, it leaves out a considerable portion of the set list from the show and thereby the set list of Springsteen's celebrated 2000 reunion with the E Street Band.
Devils & Dust is the thirteenth studio album by American recording artist Bruce Springsteen, and his third acoustic album (after Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad). It was released on April 25, 2005 in Europe and on April 26, 2005, in the United States. It debuted at number one the US Billboard 200 album chart.
Live in Dublin by Bruce Springsteen with the Seeger Sessions band documents the final show of the group's long tour in support of the album that took them across the U.S. and Europe. Along with performances from the album itself, the show is peppered with readings of Springsteen's own tunes.

Bruce Springsteen is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and humanitarian activist. He is best known for his work with his E Street Band. Nicknamed "The Boss", Springsteen is widely known for his brand of poetic lyrics and his lengthy and energetic stage performances. His best known songs chronicle Springsteen's working-class roots in New Jersey.
Background
Bruce Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949, in the town of Long Branch, New Jersey. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, worked as a bus driver, and was of Irish and Dutch ancestry. His mother, Adele Ann (Zerilli), worked as a legal secretary, and was of Italian ancestry. He has an older sister, Virginia, and a younger sister Pamela Springsteen. Bruce Springsteen was raised in a fairly devout Catholic home. The influence of Springsteen's Catholic background on his music has been noted, and Catholic Social Justice teachings appear to have become a strong influence on his adult political beliefs and activism.
Bruce Springsteen was inspired to take up music when he, at the age of seven, saw Elvis Presley on Toast of the Town (1948). When he was 13 he bought his first guitar for 18 dollars. His mother took out a loan when Bruce was 16 and bought him a Kent guitar for 60 dollars.
Education
The Springsteens were Roman Catholics, and despite their financial hardships they found the money to send Bruce to St. Rose of Lima, a parochial school in neighborhood. Whatever educational advantages the situation might have presented were lost on Bruce. According to Springsteen, "I was a big daydreamer when I was in grammar school. Kids used to tease me, call me a dreamer." Although he was bright, he was not a good student, and he did not get along with the strict nuns who were the teachers at the school.
As is often true in parochial schools, maintaining order was seemingly as important as educating a difficult student like Bruce. He gated the rigid discipline and authoritarian teaching methods of the nuns. Rather than trying harder to succeed at his studies, he stopped trying at all.
After completing the eighth grade, Bruce moved on to public high school, but his troubles continued. His rebelliousness increased, and he showed little interest in academics, athletics, and other school activities. Springsteen was a loner, with no close friends; he later said, 'It was like I didn't exist." It was music that would provide Springsteen's escape from his empty life.
He briefly attended Ocean County College, but dropped out.
By the late 1960s, Springsteen was spending most of his time in Asbury Park on the New Jersey Shore, playing in several different bands while he forged his unique sound and introduced audiences to the gravelly baritone voice for which he would later become famous. It was there that he first met the musicians who would later form his E STREET BAND. Around this time, Springsteen also acquired his nickname, "The Boss", because he had a habit of collecting money earned during shows and then distributing it evenly among his band mates.
After signing with Columbia Records, Springsteen released his first studio album in 1972. Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. garnered critical acclaim but slow sales. Many compared him to Bob Dylan for his introspective lyrics and poetic style, but this did not immediately help Springsteen make it big. Springsteen and the E Street Band followed their debut with The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle later the same year but found themselves lauded by critics but largely dismissed by the public.
Finally, in 1975, after over a year in the studio, Springsteen released a third album, Born to Run, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and skyrocketed him to fame. Drawing heavily on Springsteen's New Jersey roots, the album offered soaring guitars, larger-than-life characters, urban romance and a rebellious spirit that captured the essence of the American Dream and connected with audiences of all ages.
Springsteen's next album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, released in 1978, was a more somber affair, emphasizing themes of lost love, depression and existential suffering." The whole force of Darkness was a survival thing," he said. "After Born to Run, I had a reaction to my good fortune. With success, it felt like a lot of people who'd come before me lost some essential part of themselves. My greatest fear was that success was going to change or diminish that part of myself."
In order to promote the album, Springsteen and the E Street Band embarked on a cross-country tour that would make them famous for their marathon performances (three or four hours per show), boisterous behavior and infectious energy, captivating audiences from California to New York. During this time, Springsteen also became famous for his integrity and pride as a performer, as stories of his exhausting performances and perfectionism in the recording studio became legend.
Darkness at the Edge of Town marked a shift in Springsteen's musical style that he continued in his next two albums, The River (1980) and Nebraska (1982), which both explored themes about working-class Americans. Nebraska was a raw, solo acoustic effort that has been lauded by music fans for its provocative sound. But Springsteen's explosion into rock superstardom came in 1984 when he released Born in the U.S.A. With seven singles hitting the top of the Billboard Charts - including "Glory Days," "Dancing in the Dark," "Born in the U.S.A." and "Cover Me" - the album would become one of the best-selling records of all time and spark a successful world tour.
He began to bounce back with The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995), an acoustic set musically reminiscent of Nebraska and lyrically inspired by Pulitzer Prize–winning writers and books (John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and Dale Maharidge's Journey to Nowhere: The Saga of the New Underclass). Springsteen also recorded an Oscar-winning song, "The Streets of Philadelphia," for the movie Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks. In 1999, Springsteen reunited the E Street Band to tour in support of a new Greatest Hits album, selling out stadiums around the world despite his long absence from the limelight.
In 2002, Springsteen and the E Street Band released their first studio album in 18 years, The Rising, which became both a critical and commercial success. Lyrically wrestling with the pain, anger and anguish caused by the September 11 terrorist attacks of 2001, the album restored Springsteen's status as one of America's most iconic musicians.
Later in the decade, Springsteen continued to experiment with different sounds. Devils & Dust (2005) was a bleak, sparse acoustic record in the vein of Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad. We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (2006) was something completely different, a throwback jamboree of folksy Americana. Magic (2007) was a more traditional rock album incorporating the full E Street Band, a record viewed by many fans and critics as the true follow-up to The Rising. Springsteen wrote the songs on Magic in something of a blue mood, discouraged by the Iraq War and the long illness, and ultimately death, of E Street keyboardist and longtime friend Danny Federici.
Springsteen continues to thrive as a performer and songwriter. In 2012, he released his latest album, Wrecking Ball. He has launched a world tour to support new recording. During a concert in London's Hyde Park that July, Springsteen was joined on stage by legendary performer Paul McCartney. This dream rock pairing played two Beatles classics, "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Twist and Shout."
The impressive show, however, ended in controversy after the microphones were shut off by the event organizers as McCartney, Springsteen and Springteen's band were finishing up. The concert had gone past its scheduled curfew when the performers were silenced. The audience was outraged. Springsteen's guitarist Steven Van Zandt tweeted about the incident: "When did England become a police state?" and "English cops may be the only individuals left on earth that wouldn't want to hear one more from Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney!"
Springsteen released his eighteenth studio album, High Hopes, on January 14, 2014. The first single and video were of a newly recorded version of the song "High Hopes", which Springsteen had previously recorded in 1995. The album was the first by Springsteen in which all songs are either cover songs, newly recorded outtakes from previous records, or newly recorded versions of songs previously released. The 2014 E Street Band touring lineup, along with deceased E Street Band members Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici, appears on the album along with guitarist Tom Morello.
On November 17, 2014, Springsteen released The Album Collection Vol. 1 1973-1984, an 8-disc remastered version of his first seven studio albums, some of which had been remastered for the first time.
On September 23, 2016, Chapter and Verse, a compilation from throughout Springsteen's career dating back to 1966, was released. Five of the album's eighteen tracks had not been previously released; they include Springsteen's earliest recording from 1966, songs from his tenure in early 1970s bands such as the Castiles, Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band, along with a track from each studio album of his career. On September 27, 2016, Simon & Schuster published his 500-page autobiography, Born to Run. The book rose quickly to the top of the NY Times Best Sellers List. Springsteen announced he would promote his autobiography with a seventeen date book tour from September to December 2016.
Springsteen was brought up Catholic, but now calls himself an agnostic.
Politics
In 2008, Springsteen's liberal politics became more pronounced as he became a strong backer of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. When Obama won the election, Springsteen's "The Rising" was the first song played at the victory party; Springsteen later opened the show at Obama's inaugural celebration. Honoring Springsteen at the Kennedy Center in 2009, Obama said, "I may be the President, but he is 'The Boss.'"
Springsteen is one of America's most outspoken political artists and has almost always had a liberal agenda with both his music and his personal political activism.
Views
Springsteen draws on many musical influences from the reservoir of traditional American popular music, folk, blues and country. From the beginning, rock and roll has been a dominant influence and Springsteen's musical and lyrical evocations, as well as public tributes, of artists such as Dylan, Presley, The Animals, Roy Orbison, Gary "U.S." Bonds, and many others helped to rekindle interest in their music. Springsteen's other preferred musical style is American folk, evident on his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey, and more strongly on Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad. Springsteen songs such as "This Hard Land" demonstrate the lyrical and musical influence of Woody Guthrie.
Elements of Latin American music, jazz, soul, and funk influences can be heard on Springsteen's second album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle; the song "New York City Serenade" is even reminiscent of the music of George Gershwin. Prominent in these two records is the pianist David Sancious, who left the band shortly into the recording of Springsteen's third album, Born To Run (which also emphasized the piano, played by Roy Bittan).
Subsequently, Springsteen focused more on the rock elements of his music. He initially compressed the sound and developed Darkness on the Edge of Town just as straightforward as concise musical idiom, for the simple riffs, rock guitar solos and clearly recognizable song structures are dominant. His music has been categorized as heartland rock, a style typified by Springsteen, John Fogerty, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, and John Mellencamp. This music has a lyrical reference to the U.S. everyday and the music is kept rather simple and straightforward. This development culminated with Springsteen's hit album Born in the U.S.A., the title song of which has a constantly repeating, fanfare-like keyboard riff and a pounding drum beat. These sounds fit with Springsteen's voice: it cries to the listener the unsentimental story of a disenchanted angry figure. Even songs that can be argued to be album tracks proved to be singles that enjoyed some chart success, such as "My Hometown" and "I'm on Fire", in which the drum line is formed from subtle hi-hat and rim-clicks-shock (shock at the edge of the snare drum) accompanied by synthesizer and Springsteen's soft guitar line. The album, along with some previous records such as "Cadillac Ranch" showed clear rockabilly influences as is evident from his guitar solos, in-fills and vocal styles on these. Another clear influence of early rock n roll on Springsteen's music is evident on the song "Light of Day".
In recent years, Springsteen has changed his music further. There are more folk elements up to the gospel to be heard. His last solo album, Devils and Dust, drew rave reviews not only for Springsteen's complex songwriting, but also for his expressive and sensitive singing.
Springsteen is an activist for LGBT rights and has spoken out many times as a strong supporter of gay marriage. In 2009, he posted the following statement on his website: "I've long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that 'The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is - a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law." In 2012, he lent his support to an ad campaign for gay marriage called "The Four 2012". Springsteen noted in the ad, "I couldn't agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now." In April 2016, Springsteen cancelled a show in Greensboro, North Carolina days before it was to take place to protest the state's newly passed Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, also referred to as the "bathroom law", which dictates which restrooms transgender people are permitted to use and prevents LGBT citizens from suing over human rights violations in the workplace. Springsteen released an official statement on his website. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) celebrated Springsteen's statement and he has received much praise and gratitude from the LGBT community.
Quotations:
“One problem with the way the educational system is set up is that it only recognizes a certain type of intelligence, and it’s incredibly restrictive - very, very restrictive. There’s so many types of intelligence, and people who would be at their best outside of that structure get lost.”
"In the third grade a nun stuffed me in a garbage can under her desk because she said that’s where I belonged."
"My parents’ struggles, it’s the subject of my life. It’s the thing that eats at me and always will. My life took a very different course, but my life is an anomaly. Those wounds stay with you, and you turn them into a language and a purpose.”
"Think of it this way: performing is like sprinting while screaming for three, four minutes. And then you do it again. And then you do it again. And then you walk a little, shouting the whole time. And so on. Your adrenaline quickly overwhelms your conditioning".
"We all have stories we're living and telling ourselves".
"You ride in a limousine the first time, it’s a big thrill but after that it’s just a stupid car."
Personality
Bruce still loves hearing himself on the radio: "That never gets old. I’m still excited hearing the music on the radio! I remember the first time I ever saw someone hearing me on the radio. We were in Connecticut playing at some college. A guy was in his car, a warm summer night, and his window was rolled down, and ‘Spirit in the Night’ was coming out of the car. Wow. I remember thinking, That’s it, I’ve realized at least a part of my rock-and-roll dreams. It still feels the same to me. To hear it come out of the radio—it’s an all-points bulletin."
Bruce is a health fanatic who follows a mostly vegetarian diet, lifts weights, and runs on the treadmill. His workout routine has remained the same for the past 30 years.
Despite all his success and accolades, Springsteen battled a dark depression in the 1980s that left him suicidal. Springsteen, who has undergone therapy to treat his crippling, suicidal depression, said he never did drugs because he saw how it destroyed his unstable, alcoholic father, who used to beat him as a kid.
Physical Characteristics:
Bruce has a height of 5 feet and 9.5 inches and he weighs 77 kg or 169 pounds approximately. He also has brown eyes and brown hair.
Quotes from others about the person
Jon Landau: "I saw rock n' roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen".
Max Weinberg: "I will always desire to play with Bruce Springsteen. He's the most inspirational, most dedicated, most committed and most focused artist I've ever seen. I like to be around people like that".
Elizabeth Wurtzel: "Bruce Springsteen really got any creative person's dream career, and his good-heartedness and good-spiritedness are part of it: both because it made the people behind the scenes want to do their jobs that much better, but it also means that he connects with an audience in a way that holds them close".
