Jason Statham is a British actor and film producer. Categorized as the antihero, he is typically recognized for his action-thrilling characters and depicting tough, Machiavellian and irredeemable roles. All through his career, Jason Statham has frequently appeared his own stage stunts and combat.
Background
Jason Statham was born on July 26, 1967, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. His mother, Eileen Yates, was a dancer, and his father, Barry Statham, was a street merchant and then started singing lounge music. Statham moved to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, where he initially chose not to follow his father's career working the local market stalls, instead of practicing martial arts.
Education
When Statham was in grammar school, he was best friends with Vinnie Jones, who went on to become a professional soccer player then actor. Vinnie Jones inspired Statham to get involved in sports. Jones was already a very talented soccer player and introduced Statham to the game. The two friends played together on their elementary school’s team until Statham decided to give it up for something he loved even more. Although Statham enjoyed playing soccer with his best friend, he discovered his passion for diving and decided to focus on that instead.
At first, Statham chose not to follow in either of his parents’ footsteps. In fact, he chose to focus more on sports. For twelve years, Statham was on Britain's National Diving Squad, where he attended competitions for the 10-meter platform and springboard. In 1990, Statham finished 12th in platform diving during the Commonwealth Games. This was a disappointment for the future movie star, but he had no idea that his career was eventually going to take a turn for the better. However, he was still forced to follow in his father's footsteps as a street seller to make ends meet, selling "fake perfume and jewelry on street corners".
Though he never won a medal during his 12-year diving career, Statham competed in the 1990 Commonwealth games and came close to competing for Great Britain in the Olympics three times: 1988, 1992, and 1996. At each Olympic trial, he placed third - only two of his fellow countrymen were taken each time. Not seeing it as having been a waste of his time, he noted, "Despite the hard work, the failure to win a medal made me more disciplined, taught me to focus on hard work and determined me for the success of my future endeavors.".
While Statham’s diving career was not the most successful, it definitely aided as a stepping stone that would eventually lead him in the right direction. One day, while Statham was training at London’s Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, an agent from the modeling agency Sports Promotions discovered him. The agent thought Statham’s athletic build and handsome features would make for a perfect model, and they were right.
Shortly after being signed, Statham landed a job modeling for the clothing brand French Connection. A spokesperson for the clothing line, which was known for designing ‘high street’ clothing, said “We chose Jason because we wanted our model to look like a normal guy. His look is just right for now: very masculine and not too male-modelly.” Statham went on to model in catalogs for big names like Speedo, Adidas, and Timberland.
A few years later, his athletic build caught the eye of a talent agent and landed Statham a gig in an ad campaign for the European clothing retailer French Connection. An appearance in a Levi's Jeans commercial and work for Hilfiger followed and soon Statham had a modeling career. This helped him land jobs as a background dancer in early '90s music videos like The Shamen's Comin' On and Erasure's Run to the Sun.
As Statham was working as a model/music video actor, he was introduced to big-time British director, Guy Ritchie. At the time, he was working on a film and needed to cast someone as the role of a street-wise con artist. After Ritchie became aware of Statham’s background in black market street sales, Ritchie knew he was perfect for the role and immediately cast him as the role of Bacon in his 1998 comedy-crime thriller Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.
Ritchie’s movie was a big success and helped get Statham out in the public eye. Ritchie was pleased with Statham’s talent and decided to collaborate with him two years later in the 2000 film Snatch. In his second movie, Statham went to act alongside already very well-known and popular actors such as Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina, and Benicio del Toro. Snatch was also a big hit in theaters and made more than $80 million at the box-office.
After starring in Snatch, Statham was finally able to really break into the Hollywood scene. In 2001, he got to appear in two triumphant films- the sci-fi action horror, Ghosts of Mars and the sci-fi martial arts action film, The One. In both roles, Statham gave an extremely impressive performance. It didn’t take long until he started getting requests from directors all over Hollywood. It was then that Statham’s career really started to take off.
Although his career was finally getting off the ground, he still found himself playing mostly supporting roles. From 2002 to 2004, Statham was cast as a supporting role in a number of movies including Mean Machine, The Italian Job and Cellular. By 2005, Ritchie asked Statham to join him for a third collaboration in his movie, Revolver. Statham took on the role, but unfortunately for him and Ritchie, the movie received horrible reviews and ended up being a complete box-office failure.
In 2006, Statham made a quick recovery from his last movie flop, by choosing to star in a dramatic role in the indie film London. The film showed a new, dramatic side of the usual action star. However, after his short run with drama, he continued to be cast in action movies. In the same year, Statham starred as the lead, in the black comedy action movie that he is probably most known for, Crank. The sequel, Crank: High Voltage was slightly less outstanding, and was released four years later in 2009.
After the Crank movies, Statham became the action movie star, and seemed to suddenly be appearing in almost every action movie under the sun! The well-acclaimed American film critic hailed Statham’s performances and ascension as an action film star. White even said that Statham had the “best track record of any contemporary movie star.” In 2008, White praised Statham’s performance in Transporter 3 as “a great example of kinetic pop art.”
Statham has also starred in The Mechanic and its 2016 sequel. In 2010 he joined the Sylvester Stallone and an all-star cast for The Expendables, The Expendables 2 (2012) and The Expendables 3 (2014).
In 2013 Statham joined an already established action franchise, The Fast and the Furious 6 and in 2017, reprised his role in its eighth installment, The Fate of the Furious. Since 1998 Statham has made more than 40 films, almost all of them in the action genre. Yet unlike many action stars, Statham is known for performing the vast majority of his stunts. He has also advocated for having stunt performers be included at the Oscars with a designated category.
In the 2015 comedy ‘Spy,’ written and directed by Paul Feig, and starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, and Rose Byrne, Statham stands out as an anti-James Bond. Though Feig wrote the part of surly agent Rick Ford with Statham in mind, he told Forbes.com he never thought he would accept the role. Statham concedes that he had some hesitation about it. “You never know what you’re getting into with a comedy,” Statham said in an interview with Variety. “But it helps to have a great director and Paul Feig is the Scorsese of comedy films.” Statham is set to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel, Spy 2.
In August 2018, Statham was back in theaters as the star of the sci-fi horror film The Meg, about a 75-foot prehistoric shark that terrorizes a submarine crew. Expected to flop, the film instead proved a surprising hit, taking in $44.5 million at the North American box office and another $97 million overseas during its opening weekend.
The sequel to his 2011 film The Mechanic was scheduled for production in late 2016 and announced to open as Mechanic: Resurrection. The film went on to become highly commercially successfully in international film markets grossing $109.4 million worldwide. According to Forbes Magazine, the film was Statham's "seventh-biggest earner" and the most commercially successful solo film venture of his career.
In February 2017, he starred alongside Gal Gadot in a 30-second super bowl advertisement for Wix during Super Bowl LI. CNET reported that the advertisement reached 22 million user impressions. Statham was asked to re-join the Fast and the Furious franchise once more in 2016. The Fate of the Furious was released in April 2017 to commercial success. While the movie overall received mixed reviews, Statham was noted for his comedic timing and on-screen chemistry with contemporaries. The film would go on to be the third highest-grossing film of 2017 and the 12th highest-grossing film of all time. Shortly after its release, it was announced that a spin-off of the franchise, focusing on Statham's and Dwayne Johnson's characters, was in the process of being scripted. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is scheduled for release in August 2019. Spy 2 was confirmed on February 15, 2018.
Statham played the lead, former Naval captain Jonas Taylor, in the 2018 action-horror film The Meg, which was released on August 10. In order to prepare for scenes wherein he swims in shark-infested waters, Statham swam with bull sharks in Fiji. The film would go on to gross $527.8 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing U.S.-Chinese co-production of all time.

A competent martial artist with a background in kickboxing, wing chun, and karate, Statham frequently does his own stunts and, prior to his acting career, toyed with the idea of being a stuntman himself. Throughout his career, Statham has frequently called for there to be an Academy Award to celebrate the work of stunt men and women, being quoted as saying "I think it is an overlooked category, especially considering how much responsibility these coordinators have for some of the greatest entertainment in action movies. I mean, all of the stunt men-these are the unsung heroes. They really are. Nobody is giving them any credibility. They're risking their necks. And then you've got poncy actors pretending like they're doing [the stunts]."
Quotations:
"I've spent all those years learning how to do certain skills, and then that competitive spirit kicks in and you want to do the stunts. Basically, it's the male competitive ego at work."
"I've come from nowhere, and I'm not shy to go back."
"Your body is like a piece of dynamite. You can tap it with a pencil all day, but you'll never make it explode. You hit it once with a hammer: Bang! Get serious. Do 40 hard minutes, not an hour and half of nonsense. It's so much more rewarding."
"Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. If you have a healthy lifestyle, your diet and nutrition are set and you're working out, you're going to feel good."
"People take chances every now and then, and you don't want to disappoint them."
"Musclemen grow on trees. They can tense their muscles and look good in a mirror. So what? I'm interested in practical strength that's going to help me run, jump, twist, punch."
Personality
In the comic book series Ultimate Spider-Man, that series' version of the villain Vulture was rendered by artist Mark Bagley to resemble actor Statham, as per writer Brian Michael Bendis' instructions.
While filming on location in Varna, Bulgaria for The Expendables 3, Statham drove off the road in a truck into the Black Sea due to a brake malfunction.
When he was young, Statham played in a band with his family. His dad was the lead singer, his older brother played guitar and he was on the drums.
Statham loves to prank people. When filming Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, Producer Matthew Vaughan drove to set to show off his new Porsche. When he left, his car was making a terrible clanking noise and Vaughan took the car into the mechanic to see what could be wrong. When they popped the trunk, they found a trunk full of horseshoes, courtesy of Jason.
Physical Characteristics:
Statham has an athletic build, a height of 5 ft 10 in or 178 cm, and a weight of 84 kg or 185 lbs. Jason is bald and has hazel eyes.
Interests
wakeboarding, jet skiing, wind surfing, rock climbing
Sport & Clubs

Connections
Since 2010, Statham has been dating the English model and actress, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who is 20 years younger than him. The couple was first spotted at the Coachella Music Festival. Huntington-Whiteley is known best for her role in Mad Max: Fury Role. While attending the Golden Globes on January 10, 2016, the couple showed off her gorgeous diamond engagement ring for all to see. In February 2017, they announced that they were expecting their first child. Their son, Jack Oscar, was born in June 2017. Statham resides with his family in Beverly Hills, California.
