Distinguished actor of the 1930s. Played leading parts in several Eisenstein films, including Ivan the Terrible and Aleksandr Nevskii. His first forceful performance was in 1937 as Peter the Great’s son, the Tsarevich Aleksei, in the film of the same name.
As an actor under Stalin, had to take on many political roles. One of them was that of Professor Polezhaev in The Baltic Deputy, 1937. Also played Maksim Gorkii in Lenin 1918, the film made by M. Romm in 1939.
Very close to Eisenstein for 15 years.
