Danelia, Georgii was born on August 25, 1930 in Tbilisi into an artistic family.
His mother, M. Andzhaparidze, was a famous actress. Trained originally as an architect, but suddenly dropped his career and enrolled in the Advanced Directors’s Course at Mosfilm Studios, 1960. First film effort as a student was a 10-minute film about Vassisualii Lokhankin with the distinguished comedian Evgenii Evstigneev in the leading role.
This was based on Ilf and Petrov’s The Twelve Chairs and The Golden Calf. His first feature, Serezha (1960, Mosfilm), was scripted by Vera Panova. Gained recognition with I Walk About Moscow (1963), an experimental film (scripted by the talented Gennadii Shpalikov, with the remarkable camera work of one of the best Soviet cameramen, Vadim Iusov).
The Thirty-Three (1965), made again at Mosfilm, is a biting satire on Soviet bureaucrats, and was withdrawn after a few screenings. The film was re-released in summer 1987 when Elem Klimov became head of the film industry. Other films: Cheer Up! 1969, Hopelessly Lost, the screen version of Huckleberry Finn, which was shown at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.
