Expelled from the Moscow Teachers’ Institute for his attempt to organize an independent society of writers (with V. Bukovskii and I. Galanskov). In 1967, took part in a demonstration, protesting against Galanskov’s arrest. Spent 9 months in prison.
Arrested in 1968 for participation in a demonstration on Red Square against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Became internationally known as a human rights campaigner. Left the USSR in 1975 and settled in Paris.
