From an early age, worked as a machinist in a metal-working factory. Became a painter. From 1921, attended the drama and film studio of Proletkult where he met Sergei Eisenstein and Grigorii Kozintsev. On Eisenstein’s advice, took up photography and studied under him at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography.
In 1924, assisted Eisenstein with his film. Strike. One of his first successful photographs, Off to Work, appeared in the magazine, Sovetskoe Foto. Invited after this to take up a job on Izvestia, 1926, on which he worked as a photoreporter all his life, as well as contributing to Komsomolskaia Pravda.
Travelled to the Arctic and Siberia on expeditions with the icebreakers Krasin, Sedov and Stalin. Together with the author G. ElRegistan produced a book, Trackers in the Far North. Exhibited in the USA in 1939.
One of his photographs, Polar Night, was acquired by President Roosevelt, and was hung on the wall of his study until his death. One of the few photoreporters who kept a diary. Took pictures of his great contemporaries such as Sergei Eisenstein, Grigorii Aleksandrov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, O. Shmidt, Academician Karpinskii.
