Pupil of N. Rimskii-Korsakov and Liadov.
Taught in music schools in Ekaterinodar, Rostov-on-Don, and Moscow. Professor at the Moscow Conservatory, 1925-1935, at the Leningrad Conservatory, 1935-1944, and at the Gnesin Pedagogical Institute for Music, Moscow, 1944-1951. A. Khachaturian was one of his many pupils.
Used Jewish folk motifs in some of his early works. Travelled in Palestine.
