Emigrated with his parents during the Civil War. Settled in France. Worked in the Congo, where he met his French wife. Together under the pen-name Golon they started to write a series of romantic historical novels, Angelica, set at the time of the Roi Soleil (Louis XIV).
The series had phenomenal success: 75 million copies were published and the series was translated into 25 languages.
