Graduated from the Leningrad Choreographic School, 1946.
Star at the Kirov Ballet Theatre until 1964. From 1964, choreographer, and later chief choreographer, of the Bolshoi Theatre. Revived other choreographers’ ballets, also created his own productions, eg.
Spartak, 1968 (awarded the Lenin Prize, 1970). In 1978, staged Romeo and Juliet at the Paris Opera House. Staged a new version of this ballet in 3 acts at the Bolshoi Theatre, 1979.
Works only with the stage designer, Simon Virsaladze. From 1973, Professor of the Ballet Department of the Leningrad Conservatory.
