Conducted his own works in the USSR and abroad. Professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory and at the Gnesin Pedagogical Institute of Music from 1952. Honorary member of the Italian Musical Academy, Santa Cecilia, 1960.
Wrote music for ballets and plays, including Shakespeare productions.
