One of the leaders of the Democratic Union Party which seeks to be an opposition party in the Soviet Union as a challenge to Communist Party rule. Its first attempt to seek legality failed — 47 members of the party were detained on 8 May 1988 in Moscow. 25 were released within hours, having proved their Moscow residence, but 22 were deported from Moscow.
