Head of Soviet espionage network in Vienna, later in Holland. To escape Stalin’s purges, defected in France. Moved to the USA. Wrote articles on NKVD work which were published in many newspapers in the West.
Found dead of gun-shot wounds 2 days before he was due to testify before a commission of the US Senate. A revolver and a farewell note were at his side. Officially considered a victim of suicide, probably murdered by the NKVD.
