Ukrainian. Served in the army during World War II. After the war, graduated from the Donetsk Industrial Institute as an engineer. Worked as an engineer, head of a department, later director of Novokramatorsk Machine Construction Plant until 1952. Senior party posts in the Ukraine included 1st secretary of Kramatorsk City Committee, and 1st secretary of Donetsk Oblast’ City Committee Chairman of Communications for Industry, Transport, Post and Telecommunications in the USSR Supreme Soviet, 1966-1969.
Member of the Central Committee of the Ukrainian CP, 1960. Member of the Presidium and Politburo, 1963. Secretary, 1963-1966, then 2nd secretary of the Central Committee of the Ukrainian CP, 1966-1969.
Chairman of the Bureau for Industry in the Central Committee of the Ukrainian CP, 1963-1964. Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukraine and deputy chairman of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet, 1969-1972. Removed from these posts in July 1987.
