Educated at the Moscow Cadets Corps. Graduated from the Konstantinovskoe Artillery School and the Academy of the General Staff in 1904.
At the front during the Russo-Japanese war, 1904-1905. Worked in the General Staff, taught in the Academy of the General Staff, 1911. During World War I, on active service as a staff officer.
Connected with General Denikin in 1917, arrested for taking part in the Kornilov revolt, escaped and fled to the Don in November 1917. Took part in the founding of the White armies (commander of a regiment, brigade, and later division). Renowned for his dashing exploits.
