Joined the Komsomol, 1935. Took part in World War II. Became a well-known establishment writer in the Ukraine in the early 1960s. Later involved in the human rights movement.
Expelled from the Ukrainian Union of Writers, May 1975. Sent to a psychiatric hospital on Committee for State Security orders, February 1976, but soon released. One of the founders of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, November 1976.
Arrested February 1977, sentenced to 7 years in prison and 5 years in exile. Released under Gorbachev, emigrated, 1987.
