Conductor of his own symphonic orchestra, 1882. In 1898, organized in Petersburg the Obshchedostupnye Simfonicheskie Kontserty (symphonic concerts for the general public). Conducted, along with M. Vladimirov, at these concerts.
The Musical-Historical Society in Petersburg was named after him. From 1910-1915, this society gave free concerts and lectures on the history of music. After November 1917, left Petersburg for Finland.
