Organizer of workers in Petersburg. Lived in France after the 1905 Revolution. In 1915, on Lenin’s request, set up the Russian Bureau of the Bolshevik Central Committee to run the party in Petrograd (together with Viacheslav Molotov).
After the February Revolution 1917, member of the Executive Committee of the Petrograd Union of Metal Workers. One of the organizers of the October Revolution 1917. People’s Commissarfor Labour, later for Trade and Industry.
Member of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party till 1922. Leading member of the first Soviet Government. Organizer and leader of the Workers Opposition group, 1920-1922.
Dismissed from the government. In 1930, had to publicly acknowledge his mistakes. In 1933, expelled from the party.
After the murder of Sergei Kirov, arrested and sent to the Urals camps. Exact date not known. Rehabilitated, 1988.
