By his own account, born around the corner from the Yusupov Palace in Leningrad (now a musicians’ residence) where Rasputin was poisoned before being thrown into the Neva. Played the violin at the Tovstonogov Theatre, Leningrad. From 1977, musical director of the Kirov Opera Theatre, Leningrad.
Staged 3 operas - The Queen of Spades, Eugene Onegin and Boris Godunov-known in Russia as the Temirkhanovskie spektakli. In July 1987, brought them to Covent Garden, where they were warmly received by both critics and public. Many guest appearances in the West.
