In the Red Army during the Civil War. Classic of revolutionary propagandist theatre and poetry. Close to Mayakovsky, prominent member of LEF. Profoundly influenced Berthold Brecht, who considered himself his pupil.
In the 1920s, author of the most famous plays of the moment (Neporochnoe Zachatie, Slyshish Moskva, Zemlia Dybom, Khochu Rebenka), many of them staged by Meyerhold. After a stay at Peking, where he taught Russian at the university, wrote his best known play, Rychi Kitai, a world classic of communist propaganda theatre (first performance, 23 January 1926). Enjoyed the patronage of Trotsky.
