One of the leaders of the Crimean Tatars’ movement for their return to their homeland in the Crimea. Came into conflict with the authorities in connection with the Tatar graduates who were not allowed to leave Uzbekistan. Although an Uzbek himself, took an active part in their movement.
Arrested for the first time at the age of 16. As a teenager, sentenced to 6 months hard labour. Lost his job in 1985 because of his protests against the treatment of the Tatars.
Member of the Tatar delegation to Moscow, 1987, and participant in the negotiations with President Andrei Gromyko.
