Graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute, 1957.
Began appearing in print in the late 1950s, one of a group of promising young Soviet poets, including Evtushenko and Akhmadullina. Attracted to verbal experiments in the spirit of the 1920s (Mastera, 1959). Claimed for himself the tradition of the early Pasternak.
Accused of formalism after the appearance of his collections of poems Parabola. 1960, and Treugolnaia Grusha, 1962. Very popular at mass poetry readings in the early 1960s.
Gained success in Moscow and later in America with the musical (a genre new to the Soviet Union) lunona iAvos’, dealing with the tragic love story of a Russian officer and the daughter of the Spanish governor of California in the early 19th century.
