Paul, June 16, 1862, for Oregon gold fields. Camped on Grasshopper Creek, then in Dakota (now Montana). When Montana was organized as territory, May 26, 1864, was appointed collector internal revenue.
Held office until November 1868.
Appointed by President Johnson, January 1869, governor of Montana, but not confirmed, senate refusing to confirm any more presidential appmts. during Johnson’s term. One of Washburn party, 1870, which discovered geysers of Yellowstone National Park.
Led in work which resulted in dedication of the park and was its superintendent, 1872-1877. National Bank Examiner for Pacific Coast, 1872-1884.
