At age of 6 had lost both parents, and at 9 became self-supporting. Educated country schools, Tennessee and Alabama, 3 years.
Followed Union Army, selling newspapers, 1861-1864, and was at battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga. Removed to Texas in 1870, and became a cowboy, rancher, and large land and cattle owner. Delivered first shipload of cattle at Havana, Cuba, at close of Spanish-American War and continued in business there until had disposed of 7,000 head at high prices.
