Bachelor of Arts, Haverford College, Pennsylvania, 1849, Master of Arts, 1859. (honorary Master of Arts, Brown University, 1875. Doctor of Laws, Haverford, 1906).
Instructor Haverford College, 1848-1853. Joint founder, with twin brother, and principal English and Classical Academy, Philadelphia, 1853-1857. Principal Oak Grove Seminary, Vassalboro, Maine, 1858, 1859, Friends’ Boarding School (now Moses Brown School), Providence, Rhode Island, 1860-1879.
In 1869 purchased property at Lake Mohonk, Ulster County, New York, which by subsequent additions now contains 5,500 acres, and built a hotel (summer resort), 1870.
The estate is laid out as a private park, has more than fifty miles of roads, 25 miles of paths and trails, and is open to the public.
Member Board of the United States Indian Commissioners, since 1879. Each autumn from 1882, upwards of 200 persons have been invited as his personal guests for 4 days to discuss the Indian question. Member original board of trustees Bryn Mawr College.

(An entrance gateway and keeper’s lodge which cost over $19,000, located at the main entrance of Lake Mohonk estate, was presented Mr. and Mistress Smiley, on July 8, 1907, the 50th anniversary of their marriage, by 1,400 guests of Lake Mohonk Mountain House as a testimonial of their esteem).
