Treasurer, New Haven Tontine Company, 1827. Made contributions to Yale for development of modern languages and arts, established Titus Street Professorship of Ecclesiastical History and scholarship in theological department, 1855, donated building for school of fine arts partially endowed Yale School Fine Arts (founded 1866), one of 1st art schools in country connected with a college, co-educational (1st admission of women to Yale). Member Phi Beta Kappa, Linonian Society.
