Entered employ Central Gas Light Company, San Francisco, 1882. Built gas works in California and Oregon. Connected with Pacific Coast Electric Construction Company, 1884.
Pacific Coast agent Van Depoele Electric Company, 1885. Visited Chicago and was assistant to Mr. Van Depoele in electric railway and lighting experiments.
Installed Van Depoele’s exhibition trolley line, New Orleans Exposition, 1885. Afterward in electric construction in California. Invented improved controller, which has ben important factor in electric railway development.
Was general manager Electric Car Company of America. Deevloped improved storage batteries and in 1894 built, at Merrill, Wisconsin, 1st storage battery plant to be used as auxiliary to provide for fluctuations of railway load. Became chief engineer Electric Vehicle Company, 1897, and construction engineering other automobile companies.
Vice-president and general manager Electro-Dynamic Company, 1903-1906. Now consultant electric and mechanic engineer.
Member Common Council, Plainfield, New Jersey, 1917-1920. Member of committee of examiners Naval Cons. Board, 1917-1919; member technical advisory committee War Claim Board, War Department, Washington, 1919-1920.
Married Anna Neill, January 10, 1888. Children: Elizabeth Richards, Margaret, Harold Vail.
