Graduated from Yale, 1772, A.M. (honorary), 1779. A.M., (honorary) Harvard, 1787.
Admitted to Connecticut bar, 1775. Joined Continental Army as captain Derby Militia, 1775, advanced through grades to major, lieutenant colonel. Served in battles of White Plains, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth and Stony Point.
Helped suppress Shay’s Rebellion, 1787. Judge Massachusetts Court Common Pleas, circa 1790. Member Massachusetts Senate, 1790-1805.
An organizer Society of Cincinnati. Governor Michigan Territory (appointed by President Jefferson), 1805-1812. Brigadier general United States Army in command of defense of Michigan and attack on upper Canada, 1812.
Surrendered to General Isaac Brock after futile attack upon British in upper Canada, at Detroit without even giving battle 1812. Court martialed, found guilty of cowardice and neglect of duty, sentenced to death. Vindicated, 1824.
Member Massachusetts Senate, 1790-1805.
