Hitchcock, Ethan Allen was born on September 19, 1835 in Mobile, Alabama, United States. Son of Judge Henry and Anne (Edwin) Hitchcock.
Education
Attended private schools, Nashville, Tennessee. Completing his course at a military academic in New Haven, Connecticut, 1855. (Doctor of Laws, University of Missouri, 1902, Harvard, 1906, Washington University, Saint Louis, 1907).
Settled in Saint Louis and engaged in mercantile business, until 1860, when he went to China to enter commission house of Olyphant & Company, of which firm he became a partner in 1866.
Retired from business, 1872, and spent 2 years in Europe. Returned to the United States, 1874, and was engaged as president of several manufacturing, mining and railway companies until 1897.
United States minister, 1897-1898, and 1st ambassador, 1898-1899, to Russia.
