Attended Dickinson Seminary, Pennsylvania, and Mount Pleasant College, Pennsylvania. Graduate Otterbein University, 1865 (Master of Arts, Doctor of Divinity, same. Doctor of Laws, Lebanon Valley College).
Entered ministry, 1857.
Lived 23 years in Iowa. President Western College, Iowa, 1868-1881.
U.B. bishop, from 1881. State senator, Iowa, 1872-1876.
Traveled extensively in Africa, Egypt, Palestine and in Europe.
