Enlisted in 122d Illinois Infantry, 1862, as private. Served to end of war. Was with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea, and from Savannah, Georgia, to Washington, at final review.
Became captain 1st Alabama Union Cavalry with Kilpatrick.
Mustered out as captain and a. a. general with Corse at end of war, 4th division, 15th corporations Bvtd. major After war in newspaper work with Carlinville (Illinois) Democrat, and Chicago Evening Post.
In 1878 founded Fargo (North. Dakota) Daily Argus, and became editor of that paper and its successor, the present Fargo Forum. President Forum Printing Company Was warden Illinois Penitentiary, 1870-1873.
