From Preface - Five miles from the California line can be found the remnants of Flanigan, Nevada. The few piles of lumber from demolished cabins and exposed building foundations tell the casual visitor little about the life of a town that existed for six decades before 1970. Flanigan was never an incorporated community and its population probably never reached half a hundred. The Great Basin, like other areas of the West, is littered with towns that have given over to their ghosts. It is only when the history of Flanigan is viewed inductively, as something useful for illuminating the development and life becomes more than simply the tale of a minor desert settlement and makes Flanigan's history noteworthy.
