In 1930 Harold Jenkins graduated with first class honors from University College, London. In 1933 he completed his Master of Arts degree.
After the Quain Studentship, Harold Jenkins moved for a year (1935-1936) to the University of Liverpool as William Noble Fellow and then to the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he worked as a junior lecturer from 1936 to 1938, a lecturer from 1939 to 1944, a senior lecturer and second in command under Professor J. Y. T Greig in 1945.
In 1945 he returned to University College London, where he was a lecturer from 1945 to 1946, and a reader from 1946 to 1954. From 1954 to 1967 he served as professor of English at Westfield College, University of London (a women's college until 1964).
Harold Jenkins was a scholar of Shakespeare who served as general editor of Methuen’s New Arden Shakespeare series from 1958 to 1982. From 1967 to 1971 he served as Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh.
He also penned several pieces devoted to his appreciation of literature. Some of these works include his 1934 book Life and Work of Henry Chettle, Biography of a Minor Poet which was published in 1952, and a series of lectures focusing on Shakespearean critique written throughout his career.

On January 23, 1939 Harold Jankins married Gladys Grace Puddifoot. In 1984 she died in a car accident.
