Manfred studied at the University of Tübingen in Tubingen, Germany. In 1964 he became a Doctor of Philosophy. He was a student of the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany. He studied at the faculty of theoretical medicine.
From 1964 to 1965 Manfred worked as a scientist at the Institute of Cell Physiology in Mainz, Germany. In 1965 he was a head of the department of cell biology of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany. He worked there until 1991. In 1974 Manfred worked as a professor of the experimental oncology at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany. From 1991 to 2000 he worked at supervising science research group. In 2000 he was an emeritus professor of the department of cell biology at the German Cancer Research Center.
Manfred has a daughter: Dr. med. Tanja Volm.
